In Asian folklore, rats represent working diligently and thriftiness, so people born in a Rat year are thought to be wealthy and prosperous. These mice are crawling over an Uchida no kozuchi – also known as a magic hammer of wishes or fortune! The kanji text reads: “Shofuku chu”which means means “continuing to invite good luck” with the word “chu” meaning continuing. The additional text reads “chu, chu, chu, chu” which is also the sound a mouse makes in Japanese, so the play on words implies never-ending good luck!
